Should I use Rogaine, or is a generic version of Minoxidil good enough?
When a new drug first comes out, no other company except the company that developed the drug is allowed to market and manufacture it. This is to protect the significant investment that the drug company made in creating the drug and going through the process of proving its effectiveness and acquiring FDA approval.
Eventually, this limitation is removed and other companies are allowed to make and sell the drug. Rogaine is the original name-brand version of Minoxidil from Upjohn. Minoxidil is no longer only produced by Upjohn and can now be made and sold by other companies. As a result, cheaper versions have come onto the market. My own favorite generic brand of Minoxidil is Kirkland Minoxidil.
In short, quality generic versions of Minoxidil in the same concentrations as name-brand Rogaine should be just as effective as Rogaine, but no comparative studies exist to account for whether differences in the vehicle (the solution containing Minoxidil) can cause differences in results. However, there is no reason to assume that such differences (if they even exist) would be significant.
