Hair Loss FAQ

What drugs are FDA approved for treating AGA?

Rogaine is the brand name version of the compound Minoxidil. It is a topical solution that is usually applied twice daily to areas of thinning hair. There are generic versions of Minoxidil, such as Kirkland Minoxidil which are considerably cheaper in price. Propecia contains 1mg of Finasteride and is a pill that is meant to be taken once daily. Proscar is the 5mg Finasteride pill that is approved for treating Benign Prostratic Hyperplasia. While Proscar is not approved for treating hair loss, some people cut it up into quarters and take 1 quarter pill a day as the active ingredient is the same as Propecia's.

There are other treatments currently in the process of seeking FDA approval for treating hair loss, but the only ones currently approved are Rogaine and Propecia.
