A new process to produce Fucoidan

I'm posting this because some(like Kofi at alt.baldspot) have wondered if it's the Fucoidan in laminaria that is it's "active" ingredient. Laminaria is in EquiClear. This new stuff might make it more appealling to use..both the color and the smell.
UBE Develops New Process to Develop Skin, Hair Care Ingredient

The Japanese fine and specialty chemicals company UBE Industries Ltd. has developed a new process to produce Fucoidan. According to the company, conventinally, the ingredient is a dark color and has low viscosity, which makes it difficult to use in cosmetics applications. The company has invented a synthesis to produce a viscous material that is pale yellow and transparent.

The product is manufactured from brown algae, Cladosiphon novae-caledoniae, called Mozuku in Japanese. This algae is collected around the coral reefs of the South Pacific Ocean where it is especially rich of minerals.

To prepare the product, the company reports that first the algae is treated with ethyl alcohol and most of carotenoids in the algae are removed by this operation. Then the ingredient is extracted from the worked algae under alkaline condition and concentrated by ultra-filtration. These conditions keep the product achromatic and without excess hydrolysis. The product then is analyzed after hydrolysis to each monosaccharide by adding diluted sulphuric acid and heating. The analysis result of the ingredient is shown below.

The ingredient has also a high viscosity that is based on a higher molecular weight compared to prevailing products and a non-Newtonian fluid. It is an aqueous solution containing about 1% of the ingredient and the characteristics are high viscosity, pale yellow colour and transparency (see figure below).

It is reportedly useful for skin care for: smoothing winkles, inhibition of oxidative degradation of collagen, inhibition of oxidative degradation of hyaluronic acid, inhibition of hyaluronidase, enhancement of skin elasticity, moisture keeping activity and treatment effect of wounded skin. For hair care, the product is said to give moisture, lustre and smoothness
