Kind of interesting. Adenosine is being explored for hair loss treatment and I recently read a German study that said topical caffeine works to prevent early onset hair loss.
I researched how adenosine and caffeine work. Adenosine binds to the adenosine receptor and levels rise during the day. As adenosine levels rise, that triggers our need to sleep. Caffeine also binds to the adenosine receptor, but does not makes us sleepy (does the opposite).
Adenosine is a vasodilator and caffeine is a contricter. Kind of weird if they both would induce hair growth. Maybe increased adenosine levels is a trigger iteself...to say, hey grow hair. That way caffeine "looks" like adenosine, but doesn't make us sleepy.

This is an excellent post Tricia. The sleep thing is looking more and more like a very important factor. Not the only one, but an important one nonetheless. It would be interesting to find out whether the sleep patterns of people with pattern hair loss are in any way markedly different than the sleep patterns of people without hair loss.
Adenosine is definitely something to keep an eye on...
And caffiene playing into the picture is also interesting.... Another thing that would be worthwhile finding out about is if heavy tea or coffee drinkers have less incidences of pattern hair loss than those who don't drink a lot of tea of coffee. We already know that green tea can be beneficial.
Hmmm....

Caffeine can prevent hair loss , it's true!
Treating hair with caffeine products can stop men from going bald, according to a new German study. Professor Peter Elsner said that the stimulant has the most effect on men whose hair roots were very sensitive to testosterone, one of the causes of hair loss.
But the research does not mean that coffee drinkers will be spared a bald head in later life, only those who smear it directly on their heads. Adolf Klenk, of a cosmetic research group, said: "One would have to drink between 60 and 80 cups of coffee a day for the necessary amount of caffeine to reach the roots."
He said that men who are frightened that they may lose their hair should start treating their scalps with caffeine while they are still young.
