Dear anyone that can help me,
I have been treated for seborrheic dermatitis with no lasting results for about 3 years now. I have been given mainly different topical steroid lotions. Most never worked. Shampoos also work for a while then fade away. Any ideas on how I can stop this?

Apologies for the late reply... I was hoping someone else would jump in and help you out because seb. derm. is a problem for me too and I could also use advice on how to treat it. I have been successful to a degree in keeping it under control with the following:
Tersaseptic Shampoo
-- This is an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. My doc told me that some people with seb. derm my be allergic to the normal skin flora and fauna that everyone has and this could be leading to aggravate the inflammation of seb. derm. even more. Tersaseptic has done wonders for me in keeping inflammation under control so I think there is merit to this theory.
Nizoral Shampoo
-- Works in a similar way to the Tersaseptic
When things get bad, sometimes (very very very rarely) I use a few drops of a cortisone lotion.
-- Haven't had to do this in several months, but I also suffer from folliculitis decalvans so for now it doesn't seem like I have much of a choice.

Hi there, I have had SD for 10 years now and after trying many things and three different doctor, I think I have just found the way to keep it under control. Do you only have it on your scalp? I had it on my scalp and still struggle with the face one. Which shampoo's have you used? The one that definitely helped me was a coal tar shampoo. I used Ionil Plus by Galderma but there are a lot more brands out there. I believe I used it every other day and then just twice a week. I was surprised by how quickly it cleared up.
According to everything I've read though, you have to alternate products. Even though the scales and redness were no longer present on my scalp it was still very greasy from one day to the next. I am using Selsun Blue now and I noticed that my scalp hasn't been producing as much grease as it used to. Just to alternate I also use Head & Shoulders and Fructis for greasy roots. I usually lose a lot of hair during showers but I think the selsun has reduced the hair fall.
Anyway, hope this helps!

Last week I was going through the worst flare up ever. My nose was cracked in the folds and it was red and itchy and I was desperate - nothing was working! Finally I just warmed up a bit of olive oil and applied it with a cotton ball, waited 15 - 20 min. and washed it off with Cetaphil gentle cleanser and a drop of Selsun shampoo. My skin didn't feel tight once dried and the redness had gone, I still had some scales around my nose and chin but the improvement was drastic. I kept looking at my face every 5 minutes if not more often - hoping it wouldn't be too good to be true. For years and years my face has produced a lot of grease overnight and I was afraid the relief would only be temporary and I'd have a breakout the next morning because of the olive oil but to my total amazement there wasn't any oil overproduction. I don't use moisterizing cream but aloe vera gel. It's been two days now and it continues to improve. I hope this lasts.
