propecia: to be or not to be

Post by Dod »

Hair loss sufferers,

Recently i have been seeing more and more shedding and hair loss...this is why i decided to add spironolactone to my regimen which at the moment was Xandrox5 twice a day...I will try spironolactone 5% for a while and see if my shedding continues. However i am on the verge of considering oral medication, as i am getting tired of applying topical medications twice a day. What are ur thoughts ? And if i consider propecia.....do i completely drop the topicals....or is there an effective combination ? Also what are the risks associated with propecia...is impotence a definite?

If Anyone takes propecia could u please tell me ur thoughts.

Any advice is appreciated

Cheers,
Dod

There are a few things to consider here. For one thing, some people do not believe that the Azelaic Acid in Xandrox has any DHT inhibiting properties. If this is the case, then DHT could be a cause of the hair loss.

Another thing to consider is that you may simply be going through a shed and the hair loss will stop.

Lastly, how is your scalp health? I personally have experienced a shed when I got irritation.

Adding spiro could very well help with the situation as it would give you more assurance that you would be dealing with the DHT problem.

If you decide to get on Propecia and stop using the Xandrox then you will probably experience a shed of minox dependent hairs.

Some people exerience a loss of sex drive while on propecia, some people get other side effects such as breast growth. It is likely that you will not experience any of these side effects, but it is possible that they can occur.

It is important to note that there are other factors in male pattern baldness that we might not be aware of. People like Jacob, have gotten results with a regimen that does not consist of minox or propecia or any other really popular treatment regimens.

You will be fine. Proscar has 5 mg of finasteride and some people take that everyday. I would just pretend it didn't happen and continue your routine. It is not a big deal. Take your finas tomarrow.

I read an article recently that seemed to suggest that Propecia has been shown to also be active in preventing inflammation and hair cell apoptosis "cell death" as well as inhibiting DHT.

It was very interesting. Going to try and dig it up.

Dod, after my HT, the only treatment I am on now is Proscar (finasteride), 1.25mg every other day now.

A lot of people only use an internal.

James' tips are spot on. You have to experiment to see what works best for you, and this can take some time.

Sam

Cheers for the help and advice.

I didnt know that perhaps AA has no dht inhibiting properties. So therfore i will try the spironolactone 5% for a couple months and see if there are any changes. If not, i will try propecia and perhaps say good night to buddy downstairs. The sacrifices we make for hair loss ! :o

If as you say perhaps AA has no dht inhibiting properties...have i been wasting my time with xandrox for the last couple of years ? Is it too late for spironolactone to recruit those follicles which xandrox may not have recruited in the last few years ? Just so you know im 25.

Thanks again everyone.

Dod,

I am not saying that AA absolutely does not work. It may work and I actually used Xandrox for a few years and I consider it to be an excellent minox product with the added benefit of possibly inhibiting DHT.

I think that the whole debate about AA stems from the fact that there has been no in vivo testing, only in vitro. What I am talking about here is that inclusion of AA in the minox is based on studies performed on tissues and not actually on the scalp of a human.

I know that may sound confusing but I think that is the case with AA. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

I do not believe that it is too late to "recruit" more follicles or to "thicken" up what you have. It is really all about maintenance anyway. I have seen people who have been bald for years get regrowth.

I think that adding the Spiro sounds like a good game plan. Just so you know, it is believed by some that combining topical spiro and Revivogen together works very well at blocking DHT.

Just one other question for now...is it safe to use spiro twice a day along with he xandrox twice a day ?

And James you say spiro + revivogen is a good combo...does this mean i still would need minox for the regrowth...or just spiro + revivogen ?

Cheers

Once you start minoxidil it is a good idea to stay with it or else you will lose any "minoxidil dependent" hairs. Spiro and Revivogen do not contain minox so you would have to continue using it.

It is safe to use spiro twice a day but I would recommend spacing it as far a possible from the minox application. The best thing to do would be to email Dr. Lee and ask him his opinion on that.
