Crawling - Scalp Irritation

Post by NY123 »

Hi Guys -

I was hoping someone can halp me out... just a quick background...i'm 23, been on propecia for a year and 3 months - so far, i believe i have maintained, slight thinning in temples - i use a thickening shampoo everyday so that may improve the density of my hair.. i also use the lasercomb 2x a week, nizoral 2%, and T-Gel

About every six months, i get that crawling sensation on my scalp - from the crown to forehead... last time i felt this sensation was in october - it's irritating to say the least... i already use t-gel and nizoral regularly so unfortunately they do not subside this sensation..i don't know why i get this sensation periodically for a couple of weeks - so far 2x a year (every 6 months) - my questions are: why does this happen? does it mean i'm still losing hair? propecia is not working? or could it be something completely unrelated to hair loss (weather change?) when i scratch the back of my head, i see red crust (gross i know) - more importantly what can i use to make this go away? any feedback would be much appreciated, this really worries me

I think you should see a qualified dermatologist, preferably one specializing in hair and hair loss, to get a dianosis.

Having said that, your description of the sensations you're experiencing sound to me like you may be having some form of micro-inflammation of the follicles. In my own case, I have folliculitis. I have managed to get it under control, but it has been and will probably continue to be a struggle for me.

The quote I took from your post (above) about the red crusts is exactly what I would experience as well. I would occasionally get little nodules or bumps surrounding a follicle, that when I touched would fall off and look like a little scab. My doc said it was hardened sebum from the sebaceous glands. In MPB sebaceous activity appears to be higher than average as the glands are enlarged. Propecia should help get that under control.

Anyway, I am not a doctor, and I am only speculating that your situation may have resembled mine. You really should see a doc asap.

I used a product called InFlamil to help get my inflammation under control. Another thing that has helped me tremendously is that I have virtually eliminated highly refined sugar products from my diet.

I believe that the lasercomb has also proved invaluable.

Sam -

Thanks for your feedback - I'm not sure what it could be either... I'm not too sure about folliculitis or micro inflammation of the follicles ... i found that i started scratching the back of head so much i started bleeding - probably the reason for the crust... i don't get this feeling often, it kind of just comes and goes and doesn't come often - last time was six months ago ... my head is red, almost like i have a rash ...

i agree, i do need to see a qualified dermatologist that specializes in hair/hair loss, i have to look into finding one on Long Island - i hope i can find something to subside the irritation for the couple of weeks that i get this - it's a very uncomfortable feeling. i've been using propecia for 15 months and it hasn't really kept this under control

if i may ask - how often do you get it? does it come and go periodically?

When it first started it seemed to come and go, and I had a similar situation with the bleeding a few times as you described. In the last few years it has been persistent, only flaring or diminishing in intensity. I have managed to get it mostly under control though.
