Current Hairstyles spite thinning hair

Post by mrsmith »

I have noticed many trends lately and both trends originate from those with lots of hair. The trends for longer mid-length hair are divided by an age line and both are very similar the hairstyles of two movie characters (one middle aged and the other a rebelious young warrior) in a very famous movie series.

Older men with lots of hair have one style, which is sort of a variation on the classic hollywood clean parted hair, but with more layers and bounce. Younger men and boys are favoring a full shag look, which I used to be able to wear.

The 1990s were very thin and balding friendly:
complete shaven look
close crop cut or caesar, which looks nice if short and well kept
very short clipper-cut and spiked look.
Slicked back and in a poneytail is that was your thing.

later 90s and early 2000s: Fauxhawks were everywhere and Jude Law wore a modified version in "Alfie".

So why the rebuke now? Hair transplants are better and hairloss remedies are more abundant than they were even just 8 years ago. More men with deep enough purses are regrowing their hair and favor haircuts that show it.
And just like anything, once the stigma and secret it out, the fact that balding men chose certain styles to help "mask" the effect, the hair affluent reeacted by choosing new styles that are impossible to have unless you have a full head of hair. The new hari styles are more layered, mid length to slightly long and full of texture and body.

The excessive product fauhawk, the <spiked> look, tied back and the all shaven "Goldberg" looks are now passe.

So do we wait for more hair to come in, or do we get weaves?

Has anyone else noticed the hair trends of the last year (very recent and after the aforementioned movie)?
High School and College kids found the new shag over 5 years ago, but men over 25 have found longer, more buoyant midlength hair just in the last year.

Thoughts?

You make some very interesting points. I have noticed this as well.

I still think the shorter, close-cropped hairstyles look good on balding people though. And I think that short hair is still relatively "in", but you're right, the styles are a changin'.

Also, I feel that for some people, longer locks just don't look very good, regardless of how much hair they have. I for one, never looked good with long hair (tried it once before I started losing it).

My two bits anyway.

Yeah you're right. Short crops look good, but I think they are more "current" if worn like Kiefer's hair in "24" or Russell Crowes hair in Gladiator. Clean, no excessive guey product and naturally contoured to the shape of the head... no hard clipper-cut angles or artificial shape (flat-top). I guess it's what the stylists refer to as the "French Crop".

Patrick Stewart looks great being bald and better bald than with hair (seen in movies wearing a wig)

Yul Bryner... nuff said
Michael Jordan

We are now running out of "bald" celebrities because everyone is growing, translplanting or keeping their hair.

But to pull off "bald" you have to have the right face type, and be in trim shape. Flabby or skinny won't work. I also think that the face needs to be strong in order to look good bald. Strong eyes or a strong profile and Romanesque nose go miles in dressing out a face that is absent head hair.

I see plenty of men sporting short hair, especially those who have white collar jobs. Short hair will never go out of style for men.

As for male celebrities, they aren't growing, keeping, or getting hair transplanted as much as you think. They are wearing toupees, especially the ones with longer hairstyles.

Two male celebrities, that I know of without thinking too hard, that wear toupees are John Travolta and Ben Affleck.

I don't want anybody to feel bad if treatments don't work for them. They don't work for a lot of people and you can't look at Hollywood and say....look it is possible to keep your hair. Those celebrities fake it up big time.

I knew that Affleck did that, but Travolta? I thought he was using something like Toppik maybe, but I didn't think he had a toupee. But come to think of it, you're probably right!

Another actor that wears a toupee is Brendan Fraser, believe it or not.

I can believe that about Brendon Fraser. I really don't know, but Colin Farrell's hair looks too good to be true.

If you do a search for John Travolta hair piece picture, it brings back all kinds of hits to a close-up of his net based toupee.

There are lots of websites dedicated to celebrity toupees.

Well I know short is in, but the clipper cut short style that can be spiked is fading. Most White collar men I see are sporting mid-length (3-6 inches) hair parted off-center or on the side. Movie examples are Christian Bale's hair in batman Begins, and Ewan McGregor's (Obi Wan) style in Star Wars: ep III.
The full bodied part is only something that can be worn well with hairlines that are mostly in tact and with hair that is full.

What about Matthew McConaughey's hair? I think his was either replaced or something. Whatever it is, it looks natural and not too overdone. I would be happy with that recovery.

Longer hair celebrities... I think they might be using hair weaves, but many don't seem to need it.

Celebs I suspect of hair transplants or recovery:

Brad Pitt... He has always had great hair, but his forehead/hairline after going buzzed in 2004, is lower than before.

Ewan McGregor: lower hairline and more hair in the last couple of years.

What about Robert Redford's hair?

BTW - Google didn't return anything for John Travolta and hair piece.

Mrsmith,

Matthew McConaughey's hair is faked up a bit. Okay, I'll post a link to the pictures to that show him with and without his hair piece.

I wish celebrities were upfront about using hair pieces. They look great. If they would come out and say that it is a hair piece, then regular people would feel better about trying them out.

Many female celebrities will confess to using cosmetic enhancements, but the males do not.

You sure Matthew McConaughey has a hair piece? I thought I read that he had a transplant or something.

Matthew? Looks too good, he shows his roots and gets his hair wet in the new movie and it lays down like real hair. Translplant or amazing recovery

A current style is also longer hair combed forward and a little to the side. A lot of guys in bands wear their hair like this. I always thought that it was a blessing to have this look in style cuz I could more easily hide my hair loss by combing my hair forward.

Maybe Matthew had a transplant. But, you can swim in bonded hair pieces and they do look like they are growing from your head if you have enough money to maintain the really delicate hair pieces.
