question for canadian users

So I stumbled upon this forum through google. Let me explain my sitution, I don;t have incredibly thick hair to begin with, normal I guess, nothing special. But at 19 now, I've noticed recession at the temples and some thinning near the middle of my hairline. I'm now on on 1/4 proscar tablets a day and I bought some 2% rogaine from the drugstore and have begun using that. I've looked for extra strength rogaine but it doesn;t seem to be in any drugstore i've been to. I'm in vancouver, bc, my question is does rogaine extra strength require a prescription in canada, and can you find other products like xandrox for that matter in drugstores around here?

Hello alexandrite and welcome!

I live in Vancouver BC as well. Seems to me like you're in exactly the same boat as me when I started noticing my own hair loss. I was 19 then. I'm 32 now. I can say since then I have had my ups and downs and it has been at times very devastating for me, but I have realized that I fretted over it way too much as I still have most of my hair. Anyway, I am digressing from your questions, but I just wanted to give you a brief summary of what I went through and tell you to hang in there and realize you still have most of your hair. Your goal is obviously to keep it!

Anyway in answer to your question, unfortunately you need a prescription for 5% minox in Canada. I have stopped using Minox, but when I was using it I was getting it from Costco in the US (driving down to Bellingham about once a year to do general shopping anyway, so why not pick up the minox then right?). The Kirkland brand is pretty cheap. I also used Xandrox and found it to be my favourite minox containing product.

I stopped because of my OTHER hair loss condition a form of cicatricial alopecia (don't worry it's rare). If I didn't have this I would still be using it as it was effective for me.

thanks, I appreciate your reply. I don;t know what time will have in store for me but I am prepared to fight it til the bitter end. My dad's grandfather had thinning, hair, my two uncles on my dad's side have great thick hair and my dad was the only one to go bald. On my mom's side, both my granpa and my uncle have thick dark hair. I did talk to a dermatologist, a long while ago when I was getting acne treatment, which thankfully is no longer a concern.Anyway though, he said there was really no way of knowing whether i'd go bald eventually but I'm hoping that given my uncles and mom;s fathe and my dad's father only to an extent, that, I will be spared from extreme baldness and I'll be able to maintain and prevent any further hair loss.

In Canada Proscar requires a prescription. I don't know of any place where you can get it without one.
