Hairloss inherited from mother

I am interested in what Trish said in one reply; that recent genetic research claims that hairloss in males is inherited from the mother's side.

From what i have researched and heard, this is a myth. That the genes of hairloss can be inherited from both sides of the family.

There is a link refering to this topic, but it is a dead link. Was wondering if you could fix this. Thanks Sam.

What do you all think? Cause my mother's side of the family has great hair....so i hope Trish and her researchers are right.

Can you give me the URL where you saw this link? Then I'll try and fix it.

What has been shown is that men inherit the gene for the androgen receptor from the X chromosome, which they get from their mothers. But it's also true that hair loss is multi-factorial and that other genes are involved.

Hmm, its hard to believe because i have friends who have the exact same pattern of balding as their father...if the androgan gene comes from the mother's side, then the chance that the pattern of hairloss is like the fathers shouldn't be very high....? Whaddya think?

My own balding pattern matches my father's exactly as well (so far at least). The fact that the gene for the androgen receptor comes from the mother's side doesn't mean necessarily that you won't have your father's pattern. This is because there could be a whole bunch of other genes that come into play. The androgen receptor is only part of the picture here.

That just goes to show how little we really know about the cause of hairloss. We know the biology of how it happens, but not the underlying factors into why. I mean, androgens is suppose to be an important cause of hairloss but if you can develop your father's pattern of hairloss by inheriting other factors from his genes, there are obviously other equally important causes that we have no clue about.

Stem cell Hair multiplication and then transplant is such a superficial solution to hairloss. We bypass having to know the real causes of hairloss with this method, since its an external procedure. Just wish that research would move faster.
