my regimen and what's goin on?

i am a 26 year old male that began to notice my hairloss in Sept.04. i went to go see dr. shapiro who i later found out is supposedly one of the better doctors around when it comes to hairloss in the vancouver area. anyhow, he recommended i start using minoxidil 5% to begin - although i did not bother as it seemed like a p.i.t.a to follow through with. at the time he said it was most likely just telogen effluvium and not to really worry about things. then i went back to see him 6 weeks later at which time i told him that i had begun taking 1.25mg (which my doctor prescribed for me) of proscar/day and had been doing so for the past 4 weeks. he took a look at my hair and really said there was no question that i had mpb, although seemed to be in a rush so i didn't push the issue. anyhow, that being said, i went about my regimen of taking 1.25mg of proscar/day and things have become progressively worse. after 4 months of treatment i have really begun to notice my hairloss as pretty much my whole scalp has become thin which include the sides by my ears and top. i am currently shedding a lot of hair and really have yet to see a decrease in the overall shedding. i thought if i began treatment while i still had some hair things would slow down but perhaps not in my case. i wonder if my hairloss is not mpb and is instead something else as my thinning is happening all over. having said that, it may just be that this is the way it's going to happen for me and it's gonna be all gone within a year. does proscar have an affect of shedding at 4mos or at anytime because i will be fully honest and say things have become much worse since i began using this treatment which i was only taking as a preventative measure to begin with. how long should i wait using proscar to see it's effectiveness.

Finasteride takes about 4 months to one year to see results.

Do not worry if it takes time. Hairloss is not an easy thing to reverse. Please be do not worry.

but how much shedding is necessary when taking the proscar has just seemed to exacerbate an issue that i feel perhaps i should've just let run its natural path to begin with. i guess there are no clear answers but my concern is that the shedding is all over and not localized to one area ie. sides by ears. i wonder if my continual touching is making matters worse. the trials and tribulations are sooo fun aren't they?..hah

Hi forgettaboutit,
I have started around the same time as you with my regimen which contains Proscar (1.5 mg) and multivitamins and later added Dr Lee 5% Minoxidil and Nizoral shampoo. Today my regimen is loaded and I swallow 8 pills a day :roll::lol:
It has been 3 months and Ive never looked back.
How much shedding is necessary when taking the Proscar, that is I have no idea
By thy way; Ive never had any shed.
The key PATIENCE!
As cassin said, Finasteride takes time.
You should not expect results in 3 months. If you are a good responder your hair loss will stop at about month 4 and if there is any regrowth then it will happen around month 6 to 8, and your optimum results on the treatment won't be seen until after one full year. Be patient, know that you've got an 83% chance to keep what you have today, and let it do its job.
One more thing.
Dont let your hair loss take over your life. Get a good regimen and stick with it and forget about your hair loss :P:D

I dont think the hair shed is from the proscar but more from the Minox your using. Minox sheds your hair that is already in the resting stage. It pretty much sheds hair that is already gonna be shed but at a faster rate. Once all those hairs that are in resting stage are gone, you should grow up more hair and with the use of minox and proscar your new hair should be thicker and last longer.

thank you for your responses and i will keep everyone posted. i am currently on month 4 of proscar and haven't had a slowing down of hair loss, but in fact an increase. hopefully things will sort themselves out before i go completely mad and decide to castrate myself...hahah

Hang in there... You may want to consider adding something like Revivogen to your regimen as well if you don't want to use minox.
