What is DHT and what does it do?
DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone and is a derivative of the male sex hormone, testosterone,
formed by the interaction of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase with testosterone. Testosterone is
created in the testes in men and is the major circulating androgen. While both DHT and
testosterone can bind with androgen receptors, DHT is believed to have an affinity for the
receptor that is fivefold that of testosterone. DHT can cause hair loss by binding with the
androgen-receptors on hair follicle cells and thereby initiating a chain of events that
essentially tells the cells to miniaturize and stop producing healthy, normal hair.
