Coming to terms with hair loss

Post by Young and Balding »

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. By way of introduction, I am male and 22, and thinning quite severely on the top (such that people can tell I am balding). Making hair loss even more painful for me to accept, is that no one in my family is balding - my father and my grandfather both have more hair than I do.

Anyway, at this point in my life, thinking about hair loss is taking up waaay to much of my time - it's the last thing I think about before I sleep, and the very first thing I think about when I wake up. Sometimes, I have half a mind to just shave my head, be done with it, and just move on and accept that I am going to be bald. Sure, things are going to be painful in the short-term (especially being Asian, I would look quite peculiar being bald), but at least I might be able to achieve some sort of closure and be able to put it behind me and get on with the rest of my life. Thoughts?

If male pattern baldness does not run in your family, you might want to see a doctor.

There are things that you can do about it. Propecia is a pill that can very effective for stopping hair loss, some people even get regrowth. Also, a good amount of people use topical 5% minoxidil (Rogaine) along with the Propecia to increase their chances of getting some results. I would make an appointment with your dermatologist to see if you actually have male pattern baldness and then take it from there. Keep us updated.

Thanks guys ... yeah, have confirmed by a doctor that it is indeed MPB. Apparently it does happen (so I'm told) that a two parents with full heads of hair can produce offspring which suffer from MPB (eg. my mother has hair sensitive to DHT, but does not produce large amounts of DHT and on the other hand my dad produces heaps of DHT but has hair that is not sensitive to DHT, and I, through bad luck and chance, inherited the combination which is making me bald!)

Am trying Propecia and will see how that goes - wish me luck dudes!

Good luck with Propecia :D

Let me give you a little pep talk about shaving your head (or cutting your hair very short). If you decide to do it, you will feel weird for the first week or so. Some people will say stupid things. Many other people will compliment you. You'll get used to your new hairstyle and there's a good chance you'll love it. I went through this with my guy when he cut his hair down really short. I think he looks great and handsome. He had to get used to his new look, but now he wouldn't wear his hair any other way.

I feel your pain my friend. I am 21 and have a severely receding hairline. The sad part is my father too has a full head of hair and most of my uncles have lots of hair as well, maybe slightly receding on my mothers side but those men are in their 50s. I went to see a doctor maybe 9 months ago and he put me on propecia.

It greatly affected my libido and ability to get and maintain erections as well as the size of my erections. I dont recommend taking it but I know that is a side effect of the drug, i just think it affects a lot more than the purported 2%
