Understanding the roles of different hair follicle components and the possibilities for acting on them are key challenges in hair biology. Therefore, our goals were to identify markers of hair growth and structure in the hair follicle in order to modulate their expression as well as to study the incidence on hair growth.
Human scalp skin grafts were maintained at the air-liquid interface and fed with a previously defined serum-free medium. After a 48 hour treatment with topical application of either yeast or corn extract at 1%, scalp grafts were embedded in paraffin or frozen in OCT and then processed for immuno-fluorescence detection.
Our studies showed that the yeast extract induced an increase in keratin 14 and keratin 17 in the outer root sheath (ORS). CD34 staining around the blood vessels was increased whilst collagen IV staining of the basement membrane was more intense compared to the control. These markers are known to be important for the strength and health of the hair follicle.
The corn extract caused an increase in beta-1 integrin, p63 and ki67 in the ORS of treated human scalp skin grafts. Laminin-5 (basement membrane) and fibronectin (dermal sheath) expression were also increased by the corn extract compared to the control. To determine if the corn extract had a stimulating effect on hair growth, human scalp skin grafts were treated with PBS or corn extract (3%) daily for 21 days. Compared to PBS, the extract enhanced hair shaft elongation after 14 and 17 days of treatment.
In this model, human follicles were maintained in their physiological environment and the interactions between the different cellular compartments were preserved. This model has been used successfully to examine the modulation of key follicle components as well as hair growth.

Good find. I noticed "Protectagen" is one of the ingreds. There's a Protectagen product that contains AC-11(cat's claw extract)- something already sold for hair loss/health...but this may not be the same ingredient...
