Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
The procedure wasn't anything outrageous... draw a little blood, dermaroll, inject the PRP, spray some on top of the scalp and send you on your way. I wish I didn't have to work today... I had some bandages on my head because I can wear a hat at work and some of the PRP that was sprayed on my head came off from sweating on my forehead. Nothing too major though... retained a great deal of it on the rest of my head.

As you can see, some of the PRP came off from my hairline/temple areas from sweating under my hat... sucks, but whatever.

I think I will be doing this in the near future...
Can you post pics after 24 hours to see how noticable (if at all) the procedure really is the by the next day?
Thanks for sharing your experience!

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
Hi Chore boy best of luck to you on this treatment.
1. Is the PRP is the blood looking stuff on your head? (I'm assuming that isn't blood from the dermarolling they did on you. )
2. How long are you supposed to go before washing it off?
3. How long before you can expect to see new hair growth?
4. Did they give you any special post procedure instructions to follow at all?
5. Any follow-up visits required?

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
I was instructed to leave it on for 24 hours... guess 22 hours will have to do as I'm fixin' to wash it out. Here's a pic I just took before I jump in the shower... I'll try to post some post-shower pics before I head to work.

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
First off...thank Chore Boy for sharing your experience in such detail! It's great to be able to get all this first-hand information about PRP. Very exciting stuff.
From your pics, it doesn't look like a feasible procedure for someone like me
I have shoulder length hair with very diffuse thinning. It doesn't seem like the doctor could do the wounding/dermarolling to the extend needed without turning my head into a tangled rats nest. I was hoping it would be more "injections" and less "wounding". But you've had it done...what's your opinion?
Slightly off topic, I came across a skin care product called Plantolin whose main ingredient is centipedia cunninhami. It's Australian plant that supposedly promotes skin healing...particularly for eczema/psoriasis...but also for wounds, extreme sun damage, etc... I was reading up on it and this caught my eye:
Centipeda cunninghami A. Br. & Aschers is commonly known as "Sneezeweed" or "Old Man's Weed". It is native to Australia where it has been used by aborigines for burns, wounds, skin infections, diarrhea and rheumatism (1). In Chinese traditional medicine the plant has been used to treat colds, nasal allergies, asthma, Malaria and amoebiasis (2). A plant containing paint for room application for health promotion was even prepared and patented (3). Antiallergic (4), antiprotozoal (2) and platelet activating factor antagonistic (5) activities were attributed to the sesquiterpenoid constituents which may be found in the essential oil. Even antimutagenic (6) and antiviral (7) activities were attributed to the plant. In a previous study (8) (-)-cis-Chrysanthenyl acetate has been isolated by fractional distillation of the volatile oil, however, according to the available literature, no systematic investigation has been carried out on the essential oil which is responsible for certain activities of C. cunninghami A. Br. & Aschers. Due to the important systemic effects of the plant it was also deemed interesting to explore the effectiveness of the plant when applied topically.
Platelet activating factor antagonist? I wonder how this would be as a supplemental topical...just a thought.

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
Joanne and everyone, the bloodiness and whatnot are from the PRP that's sprayed on following the injection, not the wounding. Not sure what to tell you about dermarolling with longer hair... suppose maybe they could dermaroll in one direction to try and not get everything all tangled... I don't know.
Anywho, here's what my head looks like after shampooing the PRP off.

Thanks again Chore Boy. Glad to hear that mess on your scalp wasn't from wounding! :-&
It looks perfectly normal... and it's only been 2 days. I know women who've had lip injections that couldn't leave the house for 3-4 days. How does it feel?

Looks good...I would understand if you could see some trauma after any procedure, but I can't even tell you've had anything done!

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
Hey Guys,
I just got off the phone with Dr.Choi, and he definitely sounds like an honest guy. Why i say this is simple - he recommends finding local doctors to perform the treatment rather than travelling to Vancouver to see him and profiting from the procedure himself. This is very very important to me, and i think of great value in anyone who's offering to help with regrowth.
Few things to note with the procedure is the recommendation to use DHT blockers like fin and dut... something i've used in the past but simply am trying to steer away from getting back on. Secondly is the success rate. Dr. Choi's PRP experience in his clinic is about 60% good and the rest have not responded at all. Results are notable in only 6 weeks, which is really fast, something i am excited about! just like AG, most of us will be able to say yes it worked or no it didn't fairly quickly which is great. I wish there was more info i could spit out, but it comes down to actually trying out the procedure and testifying if it works on a personal basis to be of any value. Cost per treatment is about $450-600 CDN / session, with most responding patients requiring 2 or 3 treatments.
Although i am excited to hear about Chore Boy's experience, i am also curious whether or not i will experience the same / better / worse as with any treatment what works for some isn't necessarily an answer for others. I may drive out to Vancouver this weekend to have it performed; depending on time constraints.
CB, can you update as to what Dr.Greco told you regarding success rates, time line, # of treatments required, etc...?
Thanks,
SW2

Hey!
That was great info. Im from Winnipeg and I would travel down as well.......depending on feedback from those who have had it done.
Do you guys have any info on AG? Has anyone had really good results from it?

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
I guys,
Just to say that Dr Jones in Toronto will be treating patients with this technique as well ! :-"
Dr. Jones met with Dr. Greco in Florida last week to discuss the potential of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) as a hair loss treatment.
Dr. Jones announced today that he will start treating patients with PRP some time this month, on a small scale trial basis. The process is fairly straight forward and non-invasive. It will be performed in his Toronto/Oakville clinic in Canada.
Please note that the use of Platelet Rich Plasma for hair regeneration is a new concept. Dr. Greco seems to have some success in this area. However, there is no guarantee what kind of results (or side effects) one may expect from the treatment.
The process involves using the patient's own blood as growth factors. It is a not a surgery. Dr Jones will be using the exact same technique and protocol used by Dr. Greco. At this point, he has ordered enough supplies to treat 15 patients on a trial basis. There will be a small fee for the procedure, but it is strictly to cover the cost of the supplies and overhead required to administer the treatment. Pictures and results will be posted on Dr. Jones' website www.DrRobertJones.com as well as on Hairsite so that everyone will be able to follow the progress. Dr. Jones has no financial interest in the trial.

Dr. Jones is a friend of mine from back in the day. He has a blog here (albeit he hasn't been around in a while). I'm going to give him a call too.
Haven't gotten around to calling the Vancouver clinic, but will do so this week and see if the doctor will do an interview. Who knows, maybe I'll give it a shot too.

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
I have been in touch with Dr Greco since last summer.
I finally had my PRP Plus (with the extracellular matrix) injections with him in mid March 2009.
Will be interesting to see how my results are at the 4/6 month mark.
He is a top guy and his staff were excellent, really friendly and all very professional.
Fingers crossed.

Sounds great chrome. I recognize you from the other forums, although I didn't post very often in them being that I am the owner of this site. The problem I have always had was that the other site owners simply don't want anyone to know about this site... for obvious reasons. Anyway, I'm glad you finally found your way over here, and hope to see you participate whenever you can! Cheers

I flew out from CA to FL last week to get the PRP injections done by Dr. Greco. It was a very simple procedure and I was able to go about normal activity within 24 hours. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for something positive.

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
Ok...I just called and I can get in for one on Monday. I'm gonna do it. It is one of my last options before I just say f this and shave it all off. I don't want to go through the summer watching hairs fall off into the sink or shower.
Astro....maybe I will see you there.

Hairquest,
No idea why the PRP stuff is no longer up on his blog. He is still doing the treatments.
How are you making out with the AGHC?

Hi Huli,
well ,the blog case is a bit strange, glad to know that he is still doing the treatments, good luck my friend for yours,
as for A&G, i have finished to use it , all the vials have been used, i have for now, nothing important to report maybe a couple of new hairs on my hairline, a good hairs condition, less greasy more soft, they seems healthier, i hope these signs are positives for the next couple of month follow up, it's a bit early to make any conclusion about the product, i'm still waiting and hope for the best, at least ,to see some thickers hairs growing on my scalp would be fantastic and with a bit of luck some more strong and healthy hairs on my hairline, anyway i will keep you updated, do the same for your PRP treatments please!
regards

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
Well, I just got back from my PRP treatment with Dr. Jones. Entire procedure took just under an hour. I now have a numb and bloodly scalp and will be wearing a ball cap when I go back to work for a couple of hours this afternoon.
Since I am thinning over the entire MPB area and PRP works best if concentrated we decided to focus on the worst areas. Some of the areas within the MPB area really aren't that bad. So for me if was crown, down the middle vertex to the hairline and then across the hairline to include each temple. If this stops loss and/or thickens hair I can get the other areas done if they become problematic. I can also go back in a year and get the entire procedure done again if it works.
They have done a couple of dozen treatments since he started them a few weeks ago and I was the first of 5 scheduled for today, one of whom will be Astro_boy.
I didn't take any photos during my A&G experiment. It has yielded me nothing more than a pg allergy. I might take some photos of this (Dr. Jones did) and may take photos down the road. I am not sure if Dr. Jones will ask me back for that or not. I will certainly keep everyone posted on how things progress.
I think realistic expectations are important. We all may have learned that from the A&G. In my case I will be happy to maintain everything i have. The reason I went through with it is I am tired of seeing slow but steady continued thinning; tired of seeing hairs in the sink. The great majority of my hair loss is within the last 6 months so hopefully it is possible for the PRP to stimulate some regrowth from those follicles but I want to stress I am not counting on that. It would be an added bonus.
Good luck to others going this route. To everyone else I will keep you posted.

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
Standard needle prick a bunch of times for the numbing, after that can't feel a thing. They don't take much blood at all, maybe 50cc which yields about 10cc of PRP (got 11 out of mine woohoo ). A standard blood donation is about 5 times that which I'm used to giving so no big deal at all. Whole procedure is pretty simple and almost all done by the nurse. Saw the doctor for a little bit beforehand and discussed what was to be done and that was all I saw of him until the end. My head is a little swollen but I usually swell up more than average so I'm not worried.

This is cool. I have a few qs
I have 9 inches of hair do I have to shave it? I want the injections on my hairline, its receding.
Will it make me shed my hairs I have now, like shock loss?
How much is the PRP Plus, I know the PRP is 800 bt how much for the plus?
Thanks

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
I got mine on the front half of my head so the hairline area too, should be interesting to see the contrast to the back side of my head and give me a good gauge of effectiveness. If I get a favorable result I can just go do the other half later. My head is already shaved but I don't think they shave it if you have long hair, it does probably make the process easier and less messy however. I think hulihoop has decent length hair maybe he can help with that question. The only Dr. I know of doing PRP Plus is Dr. Greco in Florida.

Re: PRP injections: Apparently the real deal.
Hi Tricho,
My hair is a couple of inches long. No problem doing the PRP. Undoubtedly it is easier for the nurse/doctor doing it if it is shorter, but there is no need to shave it. It might take a little longer with more hair because they will have to be more careful rollering but that is it.
I had my hairline done as well, then about a one inch strip down my vertex to my crown and then a circle around the thin spot on my crown. Like Astro they got 11cc of platelets from my blood too. Almost 36 hours post treatment. I didn't wash my hair this a.m. as I didn't have time when I left the house and my scalp was still tender. I'll shower before bed. Too early to tell about shedding or shock loss but I emailed Dr. Greco and he said he has not seen any shedding or shock loss in all the procedures he has done. My forehead is a little swollen just below my hairline but not bruised and it's not noticeable. My vertex feels a little tight - I I try to do those scalp exercises I really feel that tightness. But that will all go away in a day or two.
We'll see how this goes. I am cautiously optimistic and I do feel happy that I took some positive action. My hairloss is quite recent. If this stops further loss and thickens up hairs and maybe even stimulates some follicles which have recently lost hair to regrow I will be thrilled. It is a relatively simple process and quite frankly I don't find the cost a bad price to pay once a year to keep my hair.
btw...Astro is correct. To my knowledge only Dr. Greco is doing the PRP plus. I am thrilled that there is a renown hair transplant surgeon in my hometown offering this procedure and am not at this point worried about the difference between the PRP and the PRP plus.
