Woman LOSES hair due to Minoxidil 5%

Post by Kara46 » Mon Jan 23, 2006 12:40 pm

Happy Election Day All!!
I have posted this on another section of this website, but thought it had better be posted in the Women's Section as well as I am a woman.

In March of 2004, I thought I was losing hair (and I was, but I think that was due to taking an antibiotic every day for a year). Well, I was prescribed Minoxidil 5%. After 3 days of application (2x a day). The hair that I had was gone!!! I actually had hair and the Minoxidil 5% removed it and killed the follicles (I felt burning). To this day, my hair has not grown back. If I had not used that garbage (Minoxidil 5%), I would still have my hair today. I should have never touched that crap or believed the horrid Hair Specialist who prescribed it.
Have anybody out there had the same thing happen to them or know why this happened??? I mean, I'm a woman and although baldness is accepted for men, it is NOT the same for a woman. I haven't slept a full night since that happened almost 2 years ago. Thank you all for any information.

As far as I'm aware most people who have used or use minoxidil don't experience such an adverse reaction. However you need to be using minoxidil for a few months before you can make any judgement on whether it was effective for you. It is a well known fact that minoxidil may cause temporary hair loss prior to regrowth, removing the telogen hairs. Perhaps you should use minoxidl with no propene glycol, this may stop the burning or itching sensation.

I didn't like minoxidil when I first start using it. I did get scalp irritation. I switched to using minoxidil 5% without propylene glycol for my night time application and that worked like a charm for me. No more scalp irritation.

Women's hair loss is difficult. No, we are not expected to lose our hair. Yet, upwards of 40% of women will experience female pattern baldness.

While our diffuse pattern of baldness is generally considered less severe than male pattern baldness, I think we feel worse about losing ours. We don't have the option of shaving our heads and sporting the cool shaved look.

If you are very unhappy with your appearance and treatments do not work, I suggest you look for a cosmetic enhancement of some sort (topper, wig, integration hair piece). Many women are not satisfied with hair loss treatments and they are truly happier once they find a hair piece that they like.

Alright people this thread is getting a bit out of hand. I have removed a post completely from this thread due to unnecessary name calling.

I would like to ask people to refrain from the name calling even if you find fault with people's claims.

People can disagree all you want, but let's keep the conversations civil.

My apologies Sam. I guess all I was trying to say was that it's unconscionable to post a thread about a hair loss product remvoing your hair and saying it made you "bald", thus scaring the hec out of whomever might read it. And on top of that, refusing to post evidence as if it would be difficult or troublesome and changing your story from post to post. Losing a few hairs on your temples vs. going completely bald are two different things. I mean which is it?

Just my two cents.

Audience, as I explained to Alycone, I did not have any "BEFORE" pictures because I didn't take any due to the fact that I didn't expect the Minoxidil 5% to take away my hair. The only "before" picture was destroyed by the Hair Specialist's office. "Posting evidence"... even if I could afford a scanner or a digital camera, and took some photos, they would be "AFTER" shots, wouldn't they? What are you going to compare the pictures to if there were no "Before" pictures? What sense does that make???
The Minoxidil 5% removed existing hair that I had exactly on the areas where I applied it. If I had not used it, my hair would be there today. I have not changed my story from post to post. I think I just posted once before on this section prior to Alycone's message.
I'm sorry that you feel you have to call me such horrendous names and wish me such a horrid fate. Right now, I don't care if I die, it might be a relief, actually. If I offended you, it was un-intentional. I am sorry I can not change my story to your liking. But I speak the truth about what happened to me. If it didn't happen to you, then great. Alycone, I wish you well, but please DO NOT ever address me again in any way, manner or form. Thank you.

And furthermore, I DID NOT just lose a "few hairs" at my temples. If I had just lost "a few hairs", I would not be so upset. I came on here hoping to find some similarities and to let people see both sides of Minoxidil 5%. This happened to ME. And that is all that I've ever said.

I shouldn't have called you those names. But do you realize that when you make such a post, you could potentially cause any readers of it extreme worry? If you read those posts I referenced regarding the user "air" and his/her cliam it made him/her bald, then read through some of my previous threads, you would clearly see the horror his poster put me through, causign me to think that minox had destroyed my hair. I worried over this for months on end. In reality, minox probably made things worse and I'll be the first to advise against minox, but the situation was nothign to end my life over.

All I'm saying is if you're going to make a claim that minox destroyed your hair, at the very least, take a picture of your existing scalp and highlight the damaged areas. Otherwise, you're just going to cause readers to panic.

Lastly, I apologize for my reaction and the names I called you. Hair loss is a sensitive thing with me and I over reacted.
