Checking for burnt out diodes

Post by messenger » Tue Oct 20, 2009 12:13 am

It's been about 5 months using my 300 diode helmet, so I'm assuming a few of the suckers have burned out by now. Has anyone found a more efficient method of checking than plucking every diode out one at a time? TYIA

I just take a quick peek without looking "directly" at the diodes while they are on. The further away you look the safer you are because the lasers are diffuse.

Could you look directly at them with a (good) pair of sunglasses on?

No!! You can, however, purchase glasses specifically designed for viewing laser diodes. I bought a pair on eBay for about $30, which work GREAT for checking diodes...

Rosario.... what property do these glasses have that makes them safe for viewing lasers? Can you give a little more description so I can find a similar pair? Thanks

messenger,

These are the ones that I and a number of other forum members have purchased. With them over your eyes, the laser light can be viewed without problems:

Just put a piece of paper or cloth over the diodes, the ones not lit properly are faulty.
