This article postulates that Nizoral works by both inhibiting dht, and by blocking the androgen receptor, and suggest that its use in conjunction with finasteride would probably be useful for AGA. It claims that Nizoral most likely works not because of its anti-flammatory properties, but because of its anti-androgenic properties:
