New member....worrying about hair loss less than 100 per day

Post by Kiat » Thu Oct 18, 2012 5:26 am

Hi everyone I'm a newbie here.

Let me introduce myself. I'm Thai-Chinese, 33 years old from Bangkok. I've used Accutane to cure acne before. I was on it for 4 courses, in a low dose but never experienced hair loss problem.

My last pill taken was in November 2011 when I traveled to Canada. It was freaking cold there.

I started to notice more hair loss in April 2012. I've been observing my daily life and here it is...

On pillow: about 5-20 strands
While Shampooing including patting it dry: 4-12 strands
While blowing it dry: really hard to count but I would sweep the floor after that and see around 10-20.

*I shampoo twice a day. And I am scared to massage my scalp as I don't want to see more hair on my palm.

I exercise only once a week now, playing badminton for 2 hours on Saturday. I used to work out in a gym but stopped since I returned home from Canada in November 2011.

My bad habit before was that my night shampoo, I'd pat hair dry and leave it like that, then go to bed. I recently learnt that it is one of the hair loss reasons and so now I blow it dry twice a day.

My current supplement is as seen on my signature. After reading a lot in Thai and English, I am not sure if my hair loss is from DHT? It is weird that I lose more hair than when I was on Accutane, or maybe I didn't notice it before.

I have chosen these supplements and going to order them soon. Can you please help if these usually work? If there anything that will stimulate acne? And if these can give bad side effect to our bodies?

I'd like some suggestions on how to lose less hair per day. I observed my younger brother's pillow and see only 3-4 strands, as well as dad's. He's 63 and the middle of his head is getting thinner but he's not serious about it due to his age. I think they lose some more while shampooing as well.

It's be nice if I can prevent it now before too late.

Hello Kiat..and welcome to HairlossFight.

The number of hairs you're seeing isn't that terrible. Of course seeing even less would be nice..here's an interesting article I came across:
http://www.emaxhealth.com/8782/60-secon ... c-alopecia
However, according to Carina Wasko, MD a researcher at the Department of Dermatology, Baylor College of Medicine, the 100 hairs/day estimate is too large. In a study using sixty healthy, non-balding male subjects with one-half aged 20-40 and a second-half aged 41-60, she and her colleagues devised a research study where the participants would carefully collect lost hair follicles under identical conditions. What they found was that on average only about 10 hairs are lost per day in a normal, healthy male regardless of whether they were young or middle aged. A repeat of the test 6 months later resulted in nearly identical results
You have a decent supplement regimen going on there. I'm away until Monday..will add some things when I get back- maybe someone else can jump in here as well.

Hi Jacob,

Yes I am still around.

Here is the update of what I purchased. I'd like to start the new regimen on Nov 1.

I am confused, not sure which ones to be taken together and if there's anything that will work against each other?

I'm comfortable at taking these twice a day, can you help group the morning and evening supplements? I cannot take all at once. I will take Selenium 70 mcg out as I'd replace it with Swanson's.

I do not need to take all everyday, if some of these are good if taken every 2 days please feel free to suggest me.

1. Beta-Carotene (Vitamin A) 25,000 IU

2. Full Spectrum Triple Mushroom Complex

-Maitake Mushroom (Grifola frondosa) (fruiting bodies) 200 mg
-Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) (fruiting bodies) 200 mg
-Shiitake Mushroom (Lentinus edodes) (fruiting bodies)

3. SeMSC Selenium 200 mcg (as L-Se-methylselenocysteine) (SeMSC)

4. CoQ10 60 mg

5. Saw Palmetto Whole Berry 540 mg

6. Natural Dry Vitamin E 400 IU

7. Dr. Stephen Langer's Ultimate 15 Strain Probiotic with FOS

8. Gotu Kola (Standardized)

9. Synergistic Eye Formula Lutein & Zeaxanthin

10. Royal Jelly Propolis Complex

11. Zinc Picolinate Body Preferred Form 22 mg

12. Balance B-50 Complex

13. Choline & Inositol 250/250 mg

14. Hair, Skin & Nails

-MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) 700 mg
-Horsetail Grass Stem Extract (Equisetum arvense) (standardized to 8% silica) 250 mg
-L-Cysteine (as L-cysteine HCl) 100 mg
-Choline (as choline bitartrate) 50 mg
-Inositol 25 mg
-PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) 25 mg

15. Cat's Claw 1 gram

16. AjiPure N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, Pharmaceutical Grade 600 mg

17. Curcumin Complex

My current regimen
Morning after meal: Buffered C 500 mg, Centrum (multivitamins)
Evening after meal: Buffered C 500 mg, Biotin 600 mcg, Selenium from yeast 70 mcg.

Hi again,

After reading the URl you provided. They count hairfall only on bed sheet before shampooing? If so that is not the all lost hair per day isn't it? I think hair falls while shampooing and when blown dry as well.

The 60-Second Hair Test consists of the 4 following steps:
1. Before shampooing, comb your hair starting with the comb at the back top of the head and comb forward to the front of the scalp while leaning over a bed sheet of contrasting color.
2. Count the number of hairs on the comb and the bed sheet and record the results.
3. Repeat the procedure for three consecutive days before shampooing each day.
4. Repeat the entire process on a monthly basis and take the results to your dermatologist for review.

Sorry for the delay...forgetting about this place since it's been slow lately.

Anyway..it'd be best to research the supplements to see what's best to be taken, when. I can't really see anything in your list where it'd be a problem with just going by what the directions say on the labels. Obviously spread them out a bit. Maybe I'll get more excited about researching stuff myself again..after another long weekend. I'm kind of losing my interest in these types of forums(again) lately.

Here is the hair supplement I currently am taking: http://www.europharmausa.com/products/h ... w-formula/ The millt seed extract(and phospholipids) makes it a bit different than some others out there..although there are other hair supplements that do contain (mostly if not all- less) of it.

I'm sure some falls out during the day..while sleeping..etc as well. I'm assuming they don't think much falls out to make that much of a difference though. I can recall when my hair was coming out in clumps almost- I couldn't really notice it unless I combed my hair or ran my fingers through it. I never saw much on my pillow etc.
