Discussing hair loss problem with a dermatologist or a trichologist
I have been hanging around this forum for the past few weeks and have read a fair amount of discussion/advice of how to prevent/slow down the process of hair loss.
I am approaching my mid 40s and have been loosing my hair from the top of my head for the past 15+ years or so. However, I am not quite bald yet!
Having read the discussion/advice of how to prevent/slow down the process of hair loss on this forum and a few other forums, I have reached the conclusion that I am planning to see a dermatologist or a trichologist to get professional advice to on how to prevent/slow down the process of hair loss. (No disrespect to anyone on this forum).
Have any of you guys visited one of these professionals before? If so, was it worthwhile?
Finally, if I do decide to visit one of these professionals, how do I choose which dermatologist/trichologist to visit? Do I just look through the directory of dermatologists and trichologists and find one nearest to where I live or do I choose using another criteria?
What would you advice?
Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi Geek
It depends on which country you live in. Personally I am in Australia and I would go to neither. They will take your money off you. They will tell you to use Minoxidil and Propecia. They may try to refer you to a surgeon (likely). They will offer you no real solution.
My advice is LLLT with minoxidil and DHT blockers. Suitable other products. Personally I don't like propecia (or Finestrade) as the side effects are outside my personal comfort level of 0.
The correct LLLT regime will see you slow down and reverse the effects that you are experiencing.
Good luck with your choices. Visit me at www.thelaserclinic.com.au

They wont offer any more than Minox,Prop,Niz.
If youve never been and your curious go for it.
Go with a list of questions to improve your understanding
and treatment options.
The truth is there are some people on this board who probably know more.
Thanks
Pete

that's the best thing you should do...to consult the expert and discuss what you really want. you could have a lot of options from here but then it would be different having to talk to them in person.
Will you still love me when my hair has turned to gray?

Seeing a so called professional is almost always a waste of time and money but is probably worth it if you've never done it before. They won't be able to tell you anything you don't already know. If you have some money to blow go for it otherwise continue to do your own research online. If you do choose to go to a doctor you're best off seeing someone who specializes in hair-loss. Dermatologists don't know %&$! about hairloss usually but I don't know about tricologists.

hi i live in uk and now 52 yrs i visited a tricho a few times and a waste of time it was, like already said minox or propecia or a antiandrogen like minox+progesterone topical.
Mind you they can tell you if it is mpb or you may have a different scalp disorder where they may tell you to see a doctor and refer you to a consultant dermo :-"

As you can see from the feedback here no-one who has been to a MD has any confidence in their advise.
I am a trained hair loss professional and specialise in only LLLT. The doctors that I work with throughout the US are specialists in this field, we often have open table discussions and they agree that the medical profession is bound by what the drug companies tell them. Recently a doctor (specialist) here in Australia approached me to say that he would send me clients for a 60/40 split in profit. He was promptly replied to in the negative. I view my role as one of an educator, both to my clients and to hairdressers and of cause the medical profession.
A top plastic surgeon in my area recently purchased 2 machines off me for his family members after seeing the results on some of his clients.
Speak to someone who knows, then speak to another and another, just don't get sucked in to one persons view. Then if you want another opinion come to me with the information you have collected and I will show you the validity or the myth that surrounds the info you have received.
